What this figure includes
This is a professional, permitted service change by a licensed electrician on a single-family home: new panel and breakers, transferring existing branch circuits, and where selected the service entrance conductors, mast or lateral and meter base, a code-compliant grounding electrode system, permit and inspection, and basic patching. It does not include new branch circuits, rewiring aluminium or knob-and-tube, generator or transfer-switch work, solar interconnection, an EV charger circuit, trenching for an underground lateral, utility upgrade charges for a transformer, asbestos or lead abatement, or painting beyond the patch.
How this is calculated
The formula
A service change is a sum of five separately quoted parts, each scaled by your regional labour market:
Total = panel & breakers + (base labor + circuits × per-circuit labor) × relocation factor + service entrance + grounding + permit + finish repair
The panel itself is the smallest surprise. A 100A load centre with breakers runs about $550 to $1,100, a 200A about $950 to $1,900, and a 400A arrangement — usually a 320A meter feeding two 200A panels — jumps to $2,400 to $4,800 because it is effectively two panels and a much heavier meter socket.
Labour is the real number. A straight swap starts around $900 to $1,800 before circuits, then every branch circuit landed on the new bus adds roughly $35 to $90. That per-circuit figure is not padding: each conductor has to be identified, extended if the new panel sits differently, stripped, torqued to spec and labelled. A house with 24 circuits therefore carries $840 to $2,160 of circuit work alone.
Moving the panel to a different wall multiplies labour by about 1.4. Every circuit needs a junction box and an extension, or a full re-pull, and the new location needs its own working clearance, feeder run and, often, a new opening cut through finished wall.
What actually makes this job slow
Here is the part most estimates leave out: the electrical work is usually one day. The schedule is set by the utility and the inspector, not by the electrician.
The sequence is fixed. The permit is pulled. The utility is notified and a disconnect is scheduled. The panel is changed and the meter base set. The jurisdiction inspects. Only after the inspector releases it will the utility reconnect and re-seal the meter. Each of those handoffs is a queue, and a queue is measured in days. A crew can be finished by three in the afternoon and the house can still be on a generator until Thursday because the inspection slot was Wednesday morning and the utility reconnect truck runs Thursdays.
Ask two questions of any quote: who pulls the permit, and who schedules the utility. If the answer to either is "you do", the price is not comparable to one where the contractor handles it.
Why 200 amps is the default
A 100A service was sized for a house with a gas furnace, a gas range and one air conditioner. A modern load calculation has to carry a heat pump, an induction range, a heat-pump water heater and a Level 2 EV charger pulling 32 to 48 amps on its own. Two of those four will exceed 100A. Upgrading to 200A while the meter is already off costs a few hundred dollars more than 150A and saves doing the whole dance again in five years.
A worked example
A 200A upgrade with new overhead service entrance and meter, panel staying put, 24 circuits, new ground rods, in a large metro at 1.15×:
- Panel: $950 to $1,900 × 1.15 = $1,093 – $2,185
- Labor: ($900 + 24 × $35) to ($1,800 + 24 × $90) × 1.15 = $1,001 – $3,933
- Service mast & meter: $690 – $1,725
- Grounding: $288 – $748
- Permit and utility coordination: $230 – $805
- Patching: $173 – $518
- Total: roughly $3,470 to $9,910
Relocate that panel to the garage wall and labour alone rises to $1,401 – $5,506, with patching climbing too.
Reading a panel quote
A complete quote names the panel manufacturer and model, the breaker type, whether AFCI and GFCI protection is being brought up to current code on the transferred circuits (which is required in many jurisdictions and is a real cost), who handles the utility, and whether the price includes the inspection re-visit if something is corrected. Cheap quotes usually omit the AFCI breakers and the finish repair.

- How much does it cost to upgrade an electrical panel to 200 amps?
- Most 200A service upgrades land between $3,000 and $8,000 installed with a new meter base and service entrance, and between $1,800 and $4,500 for a panel swap alone where the service conductors are already adequate. Relocating the panel or running a new underground lateral pushes it higher.
- Why does a one-day job take a week?
- The electrical work usually is one day. The permit, the utility disconnect appointment, the jurisdiction's inspection slot and the utility reconnect each sit in their own queue, and they must happen in that order. Coordination is what makes the calendar long, not the labour.
- Do I really need 200 amps?
- If you have or plan an EV charger, a heat pump, an induction range or a heat-pump water heater, a load calculation will usually land above 100A. Since the incremental cost over 150A is small while the meter is already pulled, 200A has become the sensible default for most single-family homes.
- Is a permit required to change a panel?
- Yes, everywhere in the United States. The utility will not reconnect and re-seal the meter without an inspection release, and unpermitted service work is a standard finding on a home inspection at resale and a common insurance exclusion after a fire.
- Will my power be off during the work?
- Yes, from the utility disconnect until the reconnect after inspection. Plan on a full working day at minimum, and ask the contractor whether a temporary generator feed is offered if the outage will span the inspection queue.
- Does a panel upgrade require AFCI and GFCI breakers?
- In many jurisdictions, yes — transferring a circuit onto a new panel can trigger current protection requirements for that circuit. AFCI and dual-function breakers cost several times a standard breaker, so on a 24-circuit panel this can add well over a thousand dollars. Ask whether the quote includes them.
