Fiber cement installed costs roughly double vinyl — and for that you get a siding that lasts longer, holds paint for fifteen years, and cannot melt. Vinyl wins on budget and on never needing a painter. Which one is right depends on how long you are keeping the house and what is parked next to it.

The number first
Vinyl siding installed lands in the mid single digits per square foot; fiber cement lands roughly twice that, and the gap is more labor than material. A square of fiber cement lap siding weighs around 300 pounds, cuts with dust you have to manage, and goes up slower. That is the whole story on price.
Neither is a lie at the register. The question is what the extra money buys, and it buys four things: fire resistance, impact resistance, a painted finish that reads as wood from the street, and dimensional stability — fiber cement does not move with temperature the way vinyl does.
The failure mode nobody warns vinyl owners about
Vinyl warps with heat. Not just flame — reflected sunlight. Low-E windows on the house next door can concentrate a reflection onto your wall like a magnifying glass, and vinyl siding has melted into ripples at temperatures a grill or a reflected sunbeam can genuinely reach. Siding manufacturers know; the warranties exclude it.
Park a gas grill against a vinyl wall and you will get the same lesson faster. The siding sags and distorts at a distance that feels safe. Fiber cement does not care about either — it is cement and cellulose, and it chars rather than deforms.
If your house has a neighbor with big low-E windows to the south, or a grilling patio tight to the wall, that sentence should carry real weight in the decision.
Paint is the long bill
Vinyl is colored through, so it never needs paint. It fades slowly and unevenly, and a hailstorm or a weed trimmer leaves scars you live with or patch with a piece that does not quite match the weathered field. Fiber cement arrives primed or factory-finished and wants repainting somewhere around year twelve to fifteen — that is a real five-figure maintenance event on a big house, and it belongs in the comparison.
Run the thirty-year math honestly. Fiber cement: roughly double the install, plus one full repaint. Vinyl: the cheap install, plus the probability of replacing some damaged or warped sections. On a house you are keeping, fiber cement usually wins the long arithmetic. On a house you are selling in five years, vinyl wins and it is not close.
The labor problem is real
Fiber cement punishes a crew that does not hang it regularly. The boards are heavy and brittle at the ends, the reveal has to stay consistent or every wavy course shows in raking light, and cutting it throws silica dust that requires real cutting practice — shears or a dust-collecting saw, not a cloud of a skill saw at chest height. A crew learning on your house will be slow, and some will bid it high just to make the job worth the discomfort.
That cuts both ways. A high fiber-cement bid sometimes means the contractor priced his own inexperience. Get a bid from someone whose portfolio is mostly fiber cement before concluding the material is unaffordable in your market.
Vinyl, by contrast, is the most forgiving siding ever made, and every crew in America can hang it fast. That is worth something — a bad vinyl job is rare, and a bad fiber-cement job is a lawsuit.
The verdict
Keeping the house, grilling on the patio, want it to look like painted wood: fiber cement, factory-finished, from a crew that hangs it weekly. Budget is the binding constraint, or you are selling inside five years: vinyl, in a mid-range thickness, and keep the grill four feet off the wall.
The choice I would not make is the cheap end of fiber cement with field painting to save money up front. You pay the labor twice and lose the factory finish warranty. If fiber cement is the pick, buy the prefinished board.
